Waste Land

[inspired by: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/dec/09/coastal-species-are-forming-colonies-on-plastic-trash-in-the-ocean-study-finds ]

we created shores with our waste

land made up, floating, artificial habitat

nomadic neighbourhoods constructed with

to go boxes, toiletry packagings, bottles, nets, tires

yet we do not tire of the amount of things, material things

and the amount of ignorance —

quite a foundation for a home

for these tricked coastal species, neopelagic communities

pushed to evolve, adapting to life on plastic

“Look! They’re expanding beyond what we thought was possible!

Here’s to progress of the brittle stars, shrimp, and barnacles!”

oh, we thrive on such blinding sentiments —

turning human folly into triumph

even ecological traps become success

while we ourselves become a waste of this land
